THE BORO GLORY PROJECT

Developed in-house by Northwest Iron Works builder Vince Thomas, this new method of working borosilicate glass has been tested, proven, and successful. With the support of many industry leaders we have put together what we refer to as The Boro Glory Project. The project has many functions and each manufacturer has donated a generous supply of their product to be tested. As of December 2007 we have tested many of Glass Alchemy's frits and powders which all work very well in the glory hole. Coatings by Sandburg Dicro has also been very successful and at times the colors and dicro's are more vivid then you could achieve using a torch. The Boro Glory Project was developed to test the machines capability plus its wear and tear. We are proud to announce that the Boro Glory Holes have all tested very well. They have been running since June 2007 with virtually no wear to their components. The glory holes are in use for thirty hours a week with three artists using them for the project. The bricks, burners, retaining rings, and doors are in great shape as you can see from the pictures (below). We would like to thank all of our supporters including Glass Alchemy, Winship Designs, Coatings by Sandburg, Matt White Studios, and Hot Block Tools.

These pictures are of a Boro Glory Hole that has over 750 hours of use on it. Notice there is no major deterioration of the refractory.  The slight cracks are normal for all glory holes and are due to the initial expansion and contraction that happens with every type of glory hole on the first few burns.
